This hand came up in a rebuy tournament at Poker Stars. It comes from a pro who contributes in our poker forum and often plays these $3 rebuys that usually have massive fields from 3,000 to 5,000 players. Given the ease of which a rebuy can be clicked for $3, you can imagine the final table to be rather profitable and I am sure Copp has made it there several times.
We are in the $3 rebuy after the rebuy period. I have a tight image having only gambled in the last 3 hands of the rebuy period by pushing all-in KT, 36o and A7o which won over A3 and A6. In the 34 hands since the end of rebuy period I have played 2 hands. 56s which took the pot down on an A high rainbow flop by a small c-bet, and KJo where I raised from early middle since the BB had only 5BBs left, was a gambler and therefore likely committed with almost any two, which KJo obviously beats. He had 22 and I lost the flip. Now in this hand two non-tricky TAGs and a gambler limp and I see a free flop with suited junk from the BB.

I flop absolutely nothing and plan on folding. But now the TAGs check which basically indicates they have nothing since they are not tricky and the gambler bets 1 BB into a pot of 5 BBs. I know that this guy bets his strong hands strong and his weak hands weak and that he folds the weak hands to aggression. So check-raising sounds like a good option to win the pot I wasn't interested in in the first place.
The TAGs fold as expected, but the gambler calls. This means the following: He has an underpair to the K or a draw. But I have seen this guy push draws after rebuy period. So I settle for the low pair. All I need to do now is bet on the turn to take down the pot.
Turn is a 6. I had hoped for a high card on turn since that would have made it harder for his low pair to continue. But I have picked up a double belly buster. I can make a straight now with either a 3 or a 7.
I still think he is on a low pair. So I decide to bet again, a scary amount that signals I am going to push any river to get maximum fold equity.
Am I going to push any river? Well, certainly not any river but a lot of river cards. Here's my plan: In case I get called I push any T or higher on river, I push any pair I make (5 or
and obviously the straight. While I will be potcommitted on the river it makes no sense to me to bet into an opponent that called two streets with just 8 high when the board is low and you believe him to be on a low pair.
So I bet out leaving half of what I had before the hand behind and he quickly reraises all-in. I have to call, he has turned a set of sixes and I don't catch my 8 outs.
Do I feel sorry now for making this move? Well, somehow it sucks to bust when you were not even interested in the hand at the beginning and had planned on folding. But regarding the outcome: my read was correct, he had a low pair and I am pretty sure he folds most other turncards than a 6. I'd say he doesn't give up on a 3, 5 or 6 on the turn. I have a 5 in my hand and he has two sixes which leaves 9 cards on which he calls and 36 cards on which he folds. And in case he does call I will still have either 9, 5 or 8 outs to win the hand by river, depending on which card falls. So I actually love having made this move because I think it is a big chip-winner for me long-term.
