You could say this movie was the catalyst for the poker boom we are still living today. Rounders ushered in to popularity Texas Holdem, "The Cadillac of Poker" as mentioned in the opening sequence. The movie started with a major blow and took the viewer on a whirlwind through a grinder's life in the basements of New York city. Never before this movie had there been such representation of REAL poker action and hands that seemed so credible that viewers were hooked with the turn and river cards and felt for Mike McDermott's punishing cooler.
Now more than a decade old this movie is still time well spent so somebody really has to tell me why there hasn't been a sequel?
Here is my proposed premise for sequel - Mike McDermott is living in Las Vegas nearly 10 years after squandering his chance to play in the WSOP by once again, playing over his bankroll. In fact, he is now known as someone who cannot play within his limits and is thus prone to error at the cash tables.
More experienced players always prop him up though because they know he comes back, but more so because they know he will give it all back to them somehow. Through s a side bet Mike is entered into the WSOP, but NOT the main even, but the limit Omaha 8 tournament.Mike doesn't play Omaha OR limit games and is lost without a bluffing or trapping strategy.
Wildly, he makes it to the final table after some soul searching, and among his competitors, is Sammy Farha and you guessed it, Worm who also lives in Vegas, but is largely avoided by Mike. So is this the WSOP bracelet Mike finally wins?
